Fitoplancton Marino

Vii Nutrition’s industry-driven R&D is aimed at developing integrated, multiple-product technologies for the production of specialities from microalgae for application in functional food. Vii Nutrition has embarked on a long term, perpetual collaboration with Fitoplancton Marino - a world-leading Spain-based company producing marine microalgae. Founded in 2002, Fitoplancton Marino is the brainchild two Marine Sciences graduates from the University of Cadiz - Carlos Unamunzaga and Lalia Mantecon de Marbella.

Under the collaboration, Vii Nutrition is granted exclusive rights to commercialise TetraSOD®. A product of highly advanced technology in microalgae production by Fitoplancton Marino, TetraSOD® forms the core of Vii Nutrition’s MA+ healthy ageing product.

Fitoplancton Marino began as a support firm for the thriving aquaculture sector in Bay of Cadiz, located in the Spanish region of Andalusia. It started in an advisory role aimed at improving processes microalgae productivity and quality and have since expanded the fields in which microalgae can thrive, such as cosmetics, aquarium products, and human food. Today, Fitoplancton Marino has four lines of activity (supplements, ingredients and feed for agriculture, cosmetics) and two subsidiaries in the USA (distributions of beauty products and spa treatments under the Rejuvasea brand) and Canada (Bluegenics, which distributes products for pharmacies). The company invoices around five million euros a year (2018) and employs about 40 people. In its El Puerto factory, the company uses 10,500 sq meters with a total of up to 30,000 under a concession from the port of Cadiz, with an expansion project already on the horizon for the medium term.

Fitoplancton Marino - the first in its class to receive ISO22000 and FSSC 22000 - is a world leader in marine microalgae production. They are at the forefront of a sector that in Europe encompasses only about 200 companies. Across the Atlantic, Fitoplancton Marino collaborates with researchers from the Higher Council for Scientific Research (CSIC) and the laboratories in the United States and Canada for new product developments.

Universiti Putra Malaysia

At the same time, we are incredibly excited about our collaboration with Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM). A well-known research university in Malaysia, UPM is a leader in research innovation and commercialisation that forms part of the bedrock powering us forward. UPM is ranked 2nd in Malaysia and 159th out of the best 1,000 universities worldwide, based on Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings 2020. The university has also climbed up 43 places in the Times Higher Education (THE) Asia University Rankings 2020, the most significant jump among Malaysian universities. Key focus includes the development and integration of mild cell disruption and environmentally-friendly extraction and fractionation processes.

This alliance, with its multidisciplinary approach, is a unique combination of expertise and will undoubtedly serve Vii Nutrition well in its mission to truly shape the future of healthy ageing. We believe our collaboration with UPM has the potential to extend the power of microalgae technology into healthy living and beauty products, where we hope it will significantly impact the resilience and durability of the human ageing process.
